I had to think on my feet with this building. There was a whole load of materials on site from the clients house build, the shape, size and materials of the building were largely dictated by what I pulled out from under the next tarpaulin.

We built the studio from foundation to finish with the client. There is a green roof and the external finish is lime render.

The plan was to link a new hempcrete studio ,built with left over materials from a house build, with the existing container.

Hardcore down and compacted and insulating foundation blocks laid.

A lot of the frame was built with left over timber from the clients house build.

The fact that a lot of the timbers were different sizes doesn't really affect the hempcrete as it would do if it were being boarded.

The container got a new roof.

The hempcrete and the rubber membrane of for the green roof.

Levelling the LECA sub floor.

LECA or light expanded clay aggregate was used as the sub floor insulation, its cheaper than foamed glass but not quite as easy to work with.

Fixing cork board insulation to the container.

I laid hempcrete over the LECA with battens set in to take the floor boards.

The hempcrete was laid directly onto the LECA it is 125mm thick.

This alcove creates a rather nice snug.

The container was clad with cork insulation then rendered.

This is a fine lime putty finish, as smooth as gypsum.
