giant hempcrete block and glu-lam extension
2020 and ongoing Hertfordshire
construction designer | timber frame and hempcrete contractor
I designed the construction details for this large extension for speed and ease of construction.
The frame is a pre-fabricated post and beam glu-lam frame, it was very simple to construct and did not require a crane,
I had developed the giant hempcrete block system for a previous build, it was so successful I used it again here.
The project is ongoing- I will update with costs and finished pictures once complete.

Glu-lam timbers laid out and frame going up.

First floor going in so that the roof can be accessed.

Diagonal braces for stability.

Temporary diagonal brace.

Attaching to the existing house.

Hempcrete blocks ready to go.

Glu-lam finished.

Flat roof section started.

These blocks are 600mm long x 300mm wide x 300mm high.

The blocks get tied back to the frame with stainless steel flexible frame ties.

The glu-lam will be visible internally.

I would always recommend the blocks cloak to the outside of the structure sat 20mm off the frame, but if you want to sink the frame into the wall it is possible it just takes longer to do the cuts.

Even complicated cuts are quite easy with the alligator saw.

Nice fit.
